PREPPER - The Bunker Bunny

TM

newsig

She hopped into my life just before Christmas and in no time at all had me wrapped around her little cotton tail. But she was so small we didn't know she was a she right away. We named her Bam-Bam for the way she rattled her cage with a short branch of apple wood. Ever since a clean bill of health from the Vet I have been referring to her with the more feminine but still appropriate "La Bamba"... She has been my most hilarious muse ever since.

Early on as I began to sketch out her antics, the stage name "Prepper" seemed to apply as her favorite past time (other than destroying my favorite bath robe) was digging an impressive and ever expanding burrough in the middle of my prize rose garden. It was an impressive bunny bunker.

Sadly, just around her 6-month birthday, she suddenly failed and passed away in less than a day.

I was devastated.

One of the decisions I arrived at in my grief was to continue the work I had begun - we had begun together. Cartooning rule #1: You can live forever in cartoons.

I have long admired the original by Schulz.
I have long dreaded the day I would draw my own version. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

One of the main themes in my work is how "art imitates life ~ and vice versa".

If you are old like me you might remember Captain Kangaroo & Mister Bunny Rabbit!

A SMALL VIGIL: Dusty has been maintaining his little watch on the exact spot our bunny used to rest at the top of her burrough's ramp.

The dirt ramp used to extend down to the tunnel opening at the bottom of the picture. The dirt to the right was for her excess scree as she bulldozed deeper and deeper. We used to joke about her little bunker as she pushed and pushed the dirt up, out and away to the side.
She was very territorial about this work. I tried to assist her several times with my garden trowel and was only rewarded with the fiercest rabbit growl I had ever heard. It sounded like a set of

electric barber clippers!

THE ODD COUPLE:
There is a new Android ad campaign, "different & together".
Dusty & La Bamba were a great example of that.
He loved to roll around in the ground she walked on.
I think he was trying to impress her.

IF LOOKS COULD KILL:
In just a few weeks from rescuing her the cats went from "Can we eat it?" to "Can we play with it?" And after just a few months poor Dusty was punch, drunk in love with her, sleeping next to her cage at night, keeping her company IN her box during the day when she would go in to eat or drink.
He was too fat to go down her burrough but you can see how he camped out there.
I am very grateful everything progressed to the point where she was sleeping with all of us even for just a few nights before she got sick.
She had become fully integrated into the family household and could come and go as she pleased.

~ KEEP A HAPPY THOUGHT!

I've been doin' OK.
At least until the boys found this and began a hockey game with it.
Do I frame it? Clone it? Have it bronzed???

THE CONTINUING ADVENTURES OF BAM-BAM!

PICASSO HAD HIS "BLUE PERIOD".
I AM IN MY "HARVERY PERIOD".

ONLY I CAN SEE HER.

"DONNIE DARKO"

I MISS MY BUNNY.

WHAT DREAMS MAY COME... This is occurring on the first anniversary of her passing...

So what do self-indulgent bunny cartoons have to do with one of the most famous quotes in history on the human condition? For half a millennia Shakespeare's soliloqy from Hamlet - "To Be or Not To Be?" - deals with the pain of outliving the one's you love.
Picasso had his Blue Period. I am in my Harvey Period.
Only I can see her...

If it's not redundant to say so - these are purely fantasy pieces.
An event poster for an as-yet unplanned event and a publicity shot to go with.
But it has become clear to me that i am working toward an ever-larger body of work.

THE SURREAL LIFE...

Over and over again you will find me referencing the phenom of "life imitates art & vice versa."

So, hot on the heels of my previous post regarding a fantasy art show, my newest painting, "Bedtime Story" has been juried into a new show at The Prescott Center for the Arts!

INTERSECTIONS: ART & WORDS runs August 22 thru September 24, 2016.

WHAT DREAMS MAY COME...

ARE COMING TRUE!

THE PRESCOTT CENTER FOR THE ARTS IS DEBUTING MY FIRST PAINTING FROM THIS COLLECTIO N!

BOUNCE ~

"The subject is an ambidextrous 58 year old male suffering from delusions, hallucinations and magical thinking..." So begins my latest tongue-in-cheek tribute to La Bamba.

I'm sure I have already sung high praise to y'all over HULU's original psycho-drama "CHANCE".
It is a modern noir thriller reminiscent of
Hitchcock's "Vertigo" complete with a contemporary fem-fatale ala Kim Novak.
Gretchen Mol plays the Blonde-to-die-for and Hugh Laurie stands in for the Jimmy Stewart-ish role.
Picasso said "If I see something, I steal it." and I see something of myself in the marketing banner for this dark series.

THIS WAS NO DUMB BUNNY...

Before I knew it that little ball o' fur turned into a full-blown wabbit!

3 YEARS LATER: None of our scars have healed. Not the ones on the outside. Not the ones on the inside.

Dusty still guards her resting place.

I finally brought myself to mark her grave properly with a decent stone and monument.
I even found some
antique fencing.

You thought I'd lost my rabbit
But she was here all along,
Sitting in a sunbeam
Singing rabbit songs.
You thought I'd lost my bunny,
But she's never very far;
She's burroughed, not buried
Deep within my heart.
~ Apologies to Black Hamlet

BUNNIES ON THE BRAIN?

The term "rabbit ears" has long ben out of fashion for tuning in a signal... Not here.

They're not real of course, but they are comforting.

And they help me focus my intent as I wait in the garden and listen to her suggestions for what our next project will be.

CELEBRATE THE BEST IN YOU!

A year later I sought refuge from the heat in the mile-high valley of Prescott.

In the serendipity of fate I found myself in the lee of another stone promontory; Thumb Butte.

Sequestered on the side of the mountain I undertook the year-long task of transferring my entire

library from hard copy into Kindle format~

And spending Saturday Mornings with some of y'all in my tower room learning to cartoon!

Cartoon Assemblies at Miller Valley Elementary and Mile High Middle

School were great fun with the kids & for the last few years I've been sharing my newest work with you in various galleries around Prescott.
