FIVE STAR REVIEW ON AMAZON!
"In Case Of Fire"
By Johnny Gunn on April 30, 2011
Format: Paperback
I have a small shelf of sbout 14 books that i can-grab-fast-in-case-of-fire. Joe King's
"The Idiot-Savant" is on it with Michener's "The Novel" and Wright's "Islandia".
King worked for "Barbie & Ken" at Mattel, he was California Rep for Canada's Trafford Publications, a pirate on and under the piers of Morro Bay, a cowboy in Pres-c't, AZ and a newly-wed in his early-fifties. Add it all up and you get 1/72nd of what he's condensed into this book...of CARTOONS? Yes! From Moab, UT to Ely, NV King has cartooned. He picks on the mighty and does honor to his friends and heroes. Unlike cartoon books you've read once, you'll be reaching for this Idiot's 175-'odd' pages many times, finding new chuckles every time.

*** "I'M NOT GAY, I'M JUST A SISSY" ***

In 2012, I added this title to my line of calendar collections of topical toons. In this case a look back at the gay movement's headlines over the past decade that my editorials have covered.

This resulted in a nationwide threat of boycott to any distributor that carried my work. Fair enuff. What the gay blogging network was unsatified with in reality was nothing short of the complete shut down of any printing service that would have me as a customer. They claimed that this was both no form of censorship or threat to my freedom of speech or freedom of the press.

Out of all of the more rabid hate mail I rec'd of late... I did rec'v some decent compliments from both sides of the issue...

"Hi Joe,

I was impressed enough with what you wrote to me that I mentioned it in our church newsletter. Here's what I wrote. I hope it's okay with you. Blessings! Fr. David

After I was ordained in 1973, I served at St. Clement's Church in San Clemente. One of my responsibilities was to organize and run a youth group. There was a young man in the group whom I came to admire and with whom I have stayed in contact over the years. He is now
a professional cartoonist. He has maintained his Christian faith and often makes his testimony in his work.

Some readers of this newsletter will remember the comic strips by Johnny Hart, named "The Wizard of Id" and "B.C." Like my friend, Hart was a Christian cartoonist and occasional bore testimony to his faith in his cartoons. Hart died in 2007. Hart's entry in Wikipedia says, "In his later years, he sparked controversy by incorporating overtly Christian themes and messages into the strips."

As a tribute to Hart and to further his Christian witness, my friend has put together a comic strip he calls,
"A.D." with its deliberate connection with Hart's "B.C." (As most people know, the abbreviation B.C. means "Before Christ", and A.D. means Anno Domini, Latin for "in the year of Our Lord". Proper use of this terminology is, for example, 781 B.C. and A.D. 2010. To write 2010 A.D. is incorrect; the "A.D." must come before the number.)

There has been a trend for some time to avoid using dates with this terminology since it is overtly Christian. The secular replacement for "B.C." is "B.C.E." for "before the common era"; the secular replacement for "A.D." is "C.E." for "common era." The intention clearly is to remove any reference to Christ in our dating system. My friend seeks not only to pay tribute to Johnny Hart, but to follow his example of making a public statement for his Christian faith through his work. He is setting a good example for every Christian."

COMMENT: I was surfing the web and I came across this cartoon of my grandma.        It is a little ironic that I found it on the web. Grandma was not a fan of the computer.           Letters were her forte. Always expressing the best in yourself on paper, that was her motto. My grandmother was a special lady, and she would have appreciated this so much.           It touched my heart to know that she was so loved in life and in death. She was a very free spirit and she taught me to love. So I thank you from the bottom of my heart for this tribute, it means more than you know. I just wanted to know how I could get a copy of this.           I would like to hang it up. Please let me know and thank you again.

Sincerely,                                                                                                                  Casey Parry

*** THAT'S THE WAY THE COOKIE CRUMBLES! ***

In June of 2006, just shy of the Santa Monica Daily Press's 4th Anniversary -- and subsequent to my work being published in the Los Angeles Times, the SMDP abruptly and without comment cancelled my editorial panel strip, the FUNNY PAPERZ.

All of my phone calls and emails to the Publisher & Editor to determine what exactly was going on went un-returned.

I can only assume (and you know what THAT means...) that I was too good at doing my job, and made all the right people, agencies and administrations uncomfortable.

I am however very gratified to receive these comments from loyal readers...

rbowchalk

Hi,
I am an avid reader online of the SMDP. I have friends and family out there who subscribe and I want to keep up on their local news. I live in PA ....

One question: What happened to the cartoons?? I loved Joe King's cartoons and now they are gone? My friends, family and I are quite upset by this. He is an excellent cartoonist who drew extremely well and always caught the spirit of any event. Even when
Dana Reeve died, I couldn't find a better cartoon to pass to my friends than Joe's.

I'm asking you to bring him back! We all are! We miss this feature very, very much!

Hi! Thanks for the response!
There was a comic printed either last week or the week before on the anniversary of what would be
Kristine Johnson's 25th birthday. It was about her and her accused killer, Victor Paleologus. I was attempting to find out if his trial has even STARTED yet, considering that this murder was several years ago. I can't seem to find out anything on the web and was wondering if you could give me any info. I have been looking on the web and all the LA papers ever since this case was first on one of the morning shows years ago. I found the murder of this girl appalling. I hope they bring him to justice. I'm always curious as to why this kind of trial fades away from the media, and others stay in constantly. This should be one of the one's that stays in the public eye! Thanks for helping it along!

I think your cartoons are phenomenal. The one of Dana Reeve and "Superman" brought tears to the eyes of everyone I showed it to!

Yes, this is the one I first saw! I think it's such a fantastic tribute. I just now read online the most ridiculous article in the Santa Monica news. Paleologus' attorney is claiming that he was only arrested based on past behavior. Well, HELLO. First off, this is his behavior. He's done it before. He's stolen things before. He's changed his identity before. I don't know how anyone can represent a scum like him.

I think you're AWESOME and your cartoons are so well drawn! And that's coming from ALL THE WAY ACROSS the country, here in Newtown, PA (40 miles north of Phila). My friends and I LOVE your stuff!! Keep it coming!! And I WILL be checking out your attachments. I can't imagine anyone sending you hatemail. They must be pretty miserable!!

I am the lady who loved your cartoon about 'A House Without A Home', and I love the Getty's cartoon for several reasons, I 'was' a docent at the Getty for over 20 years. but you are correct, we are not snooty but snobs, but I belong to the Villa docents and we are special.

Your comments about Marion True are not really correct; the Italian Government should be ashame and I suggested that the Villa docents declare war on Italy in honor of Marion True.  When we were still in Malibu this story was visited and revisited for years and the Italians
could not prove anything, now they have started again, and, if, should they win every single museum is in peril, sad!

Thanks, you really made me laugh.

Dear Mr. Joe King,

I am Tsutomu Kanayama, Fulbright Visiting Scholar at School of Media and Public Affairs, The George Washington University. I originally came from Japan and I am a professor in Department of Journalism at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan. I have tried to contact you, but it seems that it did not make it, so that I contacted the Santa Monica Daily Press. Mr. Furukawa gave me this e-mail address for my possible chance to reach you.

First of all, thanks for your contribution to Cartoons & Cocktails event in 2004 . I started interested in political cartoons. I hopefully would like to use it in my classes at my university after my returning to Japan. Today, I would like to ask you a favor.

I am writing a pamphlet on 2004 U.S. presidential campaign and media in Japanese. I would like to use this as part of my textbooks for my classes of International Communication and Media in the U.S.

At the event, I fortunately could buy your cartoons and I would like to use yours in explaining U.S. politics and media. Publisher already have an idea of pamphlet title as "Mass Media and Presidential Election" written only in Japanese. Details are following:

Publisher: Kadensha Publishing (Tokyo, Japan) Number of pages: 80 pages fixed price: 800 yen (about 7 US dollars) expected date of publication: April 2005.

This title will be sold only in Japan for academic interests and no possibility for further edition. In my pamphlet I would like to insert the cartoon titled "OXYMORON" (Cartoons & Cocktails Pamphlet Nr. 122) by Mr. Joe King.

I f you please, allow me to obtain permission to insert your cartoon without a fee. Because this is an academic purpose publication and target readers are limited, even at this moment I was asked by my publisher to pay advanced purchase of pamphlets to take publisher's risk off. In order for me to make it happen, I agreed to pay advanced purchase amount from my pocket. You can see I do not have any intention to make money.

I have treasured your cartoon I bought at that night and I would like to put it on my university office wall, so that I can share it particularly with my students and anyone who are interested inU.S. politics.

Please understand my situation and kindly help me. You might be busy for doing something, but please, please give me an opportunity.

Thanks for your understanding

Cordially,

Tsutomu Kanayama, Ph.D.

PS. In the same issue was a "Funny Paperz" cartoon critical of another City Councilman Michael Feinstein , which was critical but right on point in that it humorously pointed out how Feinstein was avoiding the central issue of his honesty — a valid public concern about any public official — by focusing on his commitment to grassroots campaigning. The cartoonist was pointing out the irrelevance of Feinstein's responses. His glad handing of voters has nothing to do with whether he can be trusted with money.

Dear Joe -

Cute
cartoon related to the local initiative to ban "declawing." WOULD YOU CONSIDER WORKING WITH MY SUGGESTION FOR ANOTHER CARTOON ON THIS SUBJECT? Here's my idea:
Draw a blindfolded veterinarian who is saying, "I have never seen any problems in declawed cats."  Include in the scene somehow declawed cats with one or more
problems each that arose AFTER THE SURGERY--including litter box avoidance,  lethargy, hissing, growling, biting, malformed re-growth of claws, infection, wound
dehiscence, gangrene at surgical site, relinquishment/abandonment, death.
I have cut & taped this concept and include it in my book, The Shocking Truth about Declawing Cats.  (I'll mail it to you?)
Do you know that "declawing" is a euphemistic term for toe docking-- limb amputation-- permanent & irreversible dismemberment/disfigurement/severe disablement?
Do you know that cats use their healthy paws to walk, balance, groom, grasp, RAKE & NEGOTIATE LITTER MATERIAL (hence the reported plethora of litter box
avoidance by "declawed" cats noted by shelter workers, et al.), and to perform countless other ongoing tasks of living?
Barbara Sleeper states in Wild Cats of the World (Crown Publishing, NY, 1995): "Almost prehensile in their ability to grab, cuff, tap, hold, and snatch, a cat's front paws possess a versatility unique to felines."
THERE IS NO COMPARISON BETWEEN THE VALUE OF
REPRODUCTIVE ORGANS AND LIMBS THAT PERFORM THE ABOVE
MENTIONED FUNCTIONS FOR DAY-TO-DAY WELFARE!
Furthermore, it is universally acknowledged that there is NO HEALTH BENEFIT to dismemberment/disfigurement of healthy, dexterous, multi-functional animal limbs!
(The impact of Spaying/neutering, is far less pervasive and is mainly contributory to animal
welfare.)
About l00 years ago, I was impressed that a cartoon changed the outcome of an important (Chicago) election.
I'm hoping that you don't really see reproductive organs in the same category as multi-functioinal tools of living that are organs of defense, locomotion, communication, and so much more---and that you might lend a much needed hand (!) to help vulnerable
animals. I look forward to your comments.  Here's hoping!

Good wishes,

Harriet Baker

Your cartoons about Mike "where's the money" Feinstein are so funny.
If you wish to continue exposing the Green Party's fraudulent actions, the leaders of the California Green Party threw 2 champagne brunches for themselves, with money donated to the state party.  It cost somewhere between 4 and 5 thousand dollars, and now we have very little money to give candidates.
In LA County there are around 12 people elected to do business by the Green voters for the party.  The 2 co-coordinators Tera Little and Jeffrey Drummond showed up in your city's court and lied to the judge in the suit between the LA County Council and Michael Feinstein.  These two people did not tell LA County that there was a court date, so none of us were able to attend, and they lied to the judge saying that the treasurer, a county council member, who had filed the suit had been fired.  This was not only a lie, that treasurer Donna Warren is our only minority participant.  Jeffry and Tera have been accused of being racist and minupulative, but since they were elected, we have to figure out how to recall them.

Dear Joe,
I hope you are well.
I am celebrating my birthday today at the intersection of 3rd Street and Broadway by protesting against Mike Feinstein and Ralph Nader.
I am holding a ten foot tall red, white, and blue flag pole of which holds a 3' by 4' protest against Mike Feinstein sign.
Taped to my wheelchair is a
3' by 2' blow up of your outstanding cartoon, which reflects the money that Mike Feinstein handed over to Ralph Nader while I was holding a sign that read "Feinstein is a crook."
Thank you for making my 48th birthday a very special day for me.
My highest regards and respect to you.
I laughed so hard at the image that you created of Feinstein that I peed in my pants
Feinstein's friend, the Mayor Pro Tem Kevin McKeown laughed so hard that his face turned very red and he was not able to stop laughing for two whole minutes and almost fell of his chair.
I plan to have your great work of art framed and mounted in my living room.
